UPDATE: Many of these sales have been or will be canceled due to the current health situation. We will mark the ones where we have heard they are officially canceled. If you have any information regarding your city garage sale and do not see it listed, please comment below. Thank you and hopefully next year we will be able to enjoy neighborhood sales again.
It’s the best time of the year, that’s right city-wide garage sales in MN are scattering across the state!
Minnesota garage sale “season” is generally from April-September. However, moving sales, estate sales, and consignment sales happen throughout the year.
If you’re like me, treasure hunting is one of my favorite activities. I thought it would be easier to have a one-stop list of when and where the hottest city garage sales could be found in Minnesota. Since there wasn’t one I liked, I decided to create it for you and me!

But first, I’ve got a few tips for shopping at garage sales. And, if you’re thinking about hosting a sale, I’ve got great advice for that, as well.
Tips For Shopping At MN Garage Sales
Plan your route: Using the city-wide Minnesota garage sale list below will definitely help you be more successful as a yard sale shopper. It can give you a great route for the day. If you are trying to find garage sales at the last minute or for this weekend near you, try downloading the “Yard Sale” app. Some garage sale hosts are now using this app to notify shoppers they are open for business.
Dress casually: Don’t be too dressed up, you want to be casually dressed and comfortable. Garage sales can be a lot of work, driving around, shopping, and loading your vehicle. Wear your most comfortable shoes, too.
Be hands-free: Use a fanny pack (you know they are cool looking again), waist belt for runners, jacket with large pockets, or a crossbody bag…any type of method to hold your garage sale money and leave both hands free for browsing, collecting, and paying for your sale items.
Bring small bills and coins: Some times having too large of bills can be hard for the garage sale host to break. Having the correct change makes your day go faster so you can hit up as many sales as you can.
Early or late in the day shopping: If you are on a quest for specific things like baby gear, go early to find the best stuff. If you are just browsing for a general list of items like clothing, dishes, Christmas decor or items to re-sell (at your garage sale or online Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and eBay), go late in the day to snag good deals on leftovers.
Have a plan for larger items: If you are looking for large items, like furniture or home gym equipment, have a plan in place for hauling these types of purchases. If you don’t plan on buying a large item during your garage sale shopping, but happen to come across an amazing deal be prepared to pay for the item and return the same day to haul the item away. I once snagged a hardly used hot tub from a neighbor who happened to ask my husband while browsing if he would be interested in owning one. Next thing I knew we were arranging a neighborhood move the hot tub event!
Negotiate effectively: Be nice. I know it seems silly to have to mention this, but I have been at city garage sales and have seen some shoppers be rude to the homeowner. If you aren’t interested in the items for sale just say thank you and leave. On the flip side if you are truly interested and want to make a deal avoid being over-anxious. Strike up a conversation by asking questions ask about the condition or why they are selling the item, ask politely whether they are willing to come down on the price.
Take a break: If you plan a whole day of city-wide garage sale trekking, make sure you plan to take a short break every couple of hours. Bring snacks and water, or stop at a park for lunch. Also, don’t forget to know where the local bathrooms are you don’t want to have an accident. Never ask a homeowner if you can use their personal bathroom, either. Trust me I saw a guy pull up to the garage sale and ask if he could use their house bathroom…creppy. She said no. LOL
